103: Release the "shoulds" and stop trying to fix yourself

Megan Minns King Episode 103

The online marketing space is noisy, loud, and full of contradictory opinions of what you "should" be doing... but I'm calling bullshit.

The "shoulds" are keeping you stuck and killing your creativity. They're making you think there's something wrong about yourself that you need to fix. They're stealing your power and making you think someone else knows better than you.

In this episode, we're deconstructing allll of that and more. So you can lean in to your way, reconnect with your creativity, and start taking action again!

In this episode, we're releasing the "shoulds" that are keeping you stuck, killing your creativity, and reconnecting you to your own intuition. Because there's nothing about you that you need to fix. We just need to LEAN IN and find your way.

Megan Minns King:

If you have been stuck in your head, overthinking, unsure of what to do next, you find yourself buying, you know, course after course, spending more time learning than taking action, and just really finding yourself in that moment of resistance, where you're just like, why can't I do the thing? Like, why am I spending so much time thinking or planning? Planning or learning instead of actually doing and bringing it to life. If you are there right now, then this audio drop is literally for you. This is also for you if you are kind of stuck in a comparison loop where you're consciously or subconsciously thinking that someone else is out there, maybe someone specific, maybe a couple people, or maybe just in general, someone else has the answers. Someone else has a magic pill solution. The way they are doing it must be the right way. So you should just do it their way. Um, any of that kind of stuff, then this This is just for you. And this, This is all coming through to me very intuitively, very much from a place of, like, if you are here, you are listening to this, then it is meant for you. And, and I want you to be open to it. And I want you to receive this and take what is resonating for you, and, you know, what doesn't is not meant for you, and that's fine too. What I want you to really start to do and what we're going to talk through in this is that it is time for you to release all of the shoulds, all of the things that are in your head or that you say out loud that you should be doing, all of the things you think you should be Thank you. doing, all of the things people tell you you should do. Let's be honest, the online marketing space is so loud and noisy and opinionated and it is very convincing and compelling and that's amazing because that means people are really good at marketing and really good at messaging and we love that, right? But sometimes it can be really challenging to be in such a noisy space because you have people who are saying that all of your problems are because you're using the wrong tool. All of your problems are because the back end of your business isn't organized. All of your problems are because you're not on the right platform. All of the problems are because you're doing this and not this. All of your problems are because of, you should be doing only low ticket or you should be doing only high ticket. Like, it's a lot. And I think there are times and seasons where we can, we can be really grounded in what we're doing and we are not affected by that. And we can be very intentional with plugging into resources and courses and programs to help further skill, and there are also times and you might be here right now where it is incredibly confusing and overwhelming to be surrounded by so many shoulds and so many conflicting and contradictory opinions and advice. And, you know, it can make you feel like you should be doing it all. It can make you feel like what you're doing now is really wrong. It can really make you think that there's a problem that doesn't actually exist. It can make you think that what you need to be focusing on is different than what you were planning to do. And it's just these shoulds can really kill your momentum. They can kill your creativity. They can kill your joy. They can absolutely kill your intuition. They can kill, like, all of that part of your business that is you. And I'm saying this as someone who absolutely has learned this lesson many times at different depths, different severities, over and over again. And that's why I'm so passionate about this, because even recently I found myself caught up in a loop of I should be blank. Well, I should be doing this, should be doing that. Sometimes it's because a mentor told me something. Sometimes it's because someone posted something on Instagram that was very convincing and compelling. Sometimes it's coming from my own self. Because the strategic part of my brain is like, well, I should just do this because that is the simplest or that's the most strategic or that's the most leveraged. Right. And I can tell you firsthand that when we are operating and thinking from a place of, I should be dot, dot, dot, it is going to ultimately slow down. Slow you down and you're going to stall out and you're either going to end up building a business that you don't actually enjoy or you're going to hit that point where you're like, I just want to burn it all down. Or you're just really going to find yourself stuck, not moving at all. So how do we release the shoulds? How do, how do we let go of all of the things you should be doing? Right? Well, the main way we do this is number one, truly embracing and accepting the truth that there is no one right way. There is no one right way to do business. There is no one right way to do life, to do motherhood, to do any of this. There is no one right way Thank you. There is no wrong way, okay? That's part of this, right? It's just reminding yourself, coming back to that place where you're just remindering and anchoring back into the reality and the truth there is no one right way. There is no wrong way. The best way for you to actually grow your business so that it is enjoyable and fulfilling and rewarding and taps into your unique gifts, your purpose for being here, for doing this at a greater level, is to actually come back to what you intuitively, instinctually want to do by reconnecting with who you are and how you operate, how your brain works, how you make decisions, how you think, like, really just reconnecting with who you actually are and how you actually are, and instead of looking at that as something to fix, you embrace it. There have been so many times where I look at myself and it's like, well, I should be more disciplined. I should be more consistent, right? Oh, I should be, you know, I should have a really detailed plan for three months from now and I should be creating content right now that's not even going to get sent top for. 60 days. And I should be doing this. I should be doing that. I should be doing that because someone else is doing it and it's working for them. And logically that makes sense. That sounds great. What a relief to not be like doing stuff right now. Right. But the reality is that there are seasons of life and business for me. We're trying to, be far ahead and trying to plan and do all of those things actually completely kills my creativity. And for a while there, my solution to that was to then fix myself. Well, that's a me, that's a me problem. I need to figure out how to be creative, even when it's not getting sent out right now. I've even had mentors tell me that. And the truth is that that's bullshit. Like I'm calling Bill, I'm calling bullshit on that because I think, and I know that the best way to handle that situation is to actually allow this to just be how I show up right now. And to just make that be okay and say, oh, okay, well, if that's just the way it is, How can I work? That does that mean I don't plan at all? No, but does it mean maybe my plans are a little looser? Does it mean instead of having a really detailed content calendar where I know exactly what I'm posting and when it's posting and a da da da da da, maybe instead I have a big document with where I brainstorm and I put ideas and maybe I have an idea of like how often I want to be posting. And when I sit down to create, if I get into a flow, I allow myself to create more, right? But it's also then leaving opportunity for me to like observe what lessons am I learning? What patterns am I seeing within my clients? What am I intuitively desiring to share? And it allows that as well. So that's just kind of one example of how this has come about. Another thing come through for me recently and that I wanted to share with you is that you do not need to like fix anything about you. And this is very related to this idea of the shoulds because when we get caught up in this thought loop of we should be doing something a certain way or whatever. Often it's partnered with this idea that there is something about you that needs to be fixed or something about your business or your whatever that needs to be fixed. And we spend so much time trying to improve these perceived weaknesses when we should just be doubling down. And leaning into our strengths and making that okay. Another example is, you know, you hear all the time, people don't want to have any calls. I don't want to have any calls on my calendar. You know, it's celebrated to have no calls, you know, to be completely asynchronous, you know, which is great. I'm not saying that's wrong at all. It's like, that is something people are very opinionated about. I'm also in a season two. End of life, I have three kids under the age of five. I don't work a ton of hours. So logically, strategically, you would also be like, yeah, we really shouldn't do that many calls, right? You want to have this flexible freedom, so we shouldn't have calls, right? Do we already hear the shoulds coming through? Well, those things may make sense, but I know myself, and you need to know yourself too. But I know myself enough to be like, you know what? I freaking love live calls. Does it mean I want to spend all day every day on a live call? Absolutely not. That is not realistic, right? But does it mean my main goal needs to be to have no calls? Does that mean my version of a successful business and a fulfilling business is no calls just because because that's someone else's version? No. In fact, I'm losing out on a lot of the magic and a lot of my mentorship and coaching is very much on a call with you on Zoom, like intuitively reading between the lines. I can tell the vibe is off. I can tell we're not really talking about what we need to talk about. I can tell we haven't gotten down to the deeper level of what's really holding you back. And that all happens live. Okay. I can tell when I'm teaching live that we tap, I'm able to tap into a deeper knowing and better coaching when it's live. And I love answering questions. I love clarifying live. It's just. It's good for me and it has a very positive ripple effect. So I don't need to look at someone else and just because they don't want to have any calls, that doesn't make it wrong that I enjoy calls. It doesn't make it wrong for me. Okay. And I think I can think of like a million other examples. But I want you to really realize where are you stuck in the, the should loop. Catch yourself every time you say should, like, let that be a red flag and an alarm where you pause and you say, wait a minute, like, where is the should coming from? Right? Where is that actually? Who told you that? Should, like, who, so who told you? Who is the, who decided you should do that? And do you actually, like, is that actually real for you? When you can remind yourself that there is no one right or wrong way, when you can, you know, make that mute, all the noise, when you can surround yourself in communities or programs or masterminds or mentorship, where it's not about following a specific blueprint, where you're all doing the same thing, but instead where you're in a space where someone is challenging you to actually uncover your own way and your own path and helping refine that and helping you with the strategy. Strategy of it, but also helping make sure it's aligned with you and your gifts. When you can make sure that the decisions you're making in your business are allowing you to lean in to the way you naturally work and show up instead of caring what anyone else is doing. This is when the magic is really going to start to flow. This is when the ideas are going to come through. This is when your intuition is going to get stronger. This is when momentum will help happen when you can take action so much faster. Um, Oh, I remember the other example I was going to share for me is, um, the more I create, the more I create, that's like my big thing. And that is not true for everyone. But for me, you know, in my head, Oh, it makes so much sense to like batch once a month and I should be batching more often. I should to be ahead. I should yada, yada, all this inner should dialogue and sorry, I've been sick for like a month, hold on. Okay. I'm back. And all of this narrative of like, I should be farther ahead of schedule. I should be batching. I should not be creating content every day. I should be blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Actually end up, end up killing my creativity completely because when I would batch successfully, I then wouldn't be creating consistently. I wouldn't be using my voice as often as frequently. And for me, like I need to be using my voice regularly. Daily in order to keep this channel open and flowing. And the more I create, the more I create and the easier and the entire ripple effect is so bigger. Even if you're like, Oh, it doesn't make sense. You don't need to be posting on Instagram and over here and doing this and doing that. You don't need to do it all. Sure. But I know that the more I create, the more I create. So it doesn't mean I'm a stress about being everywhere all the time, but it does mean, Hey, I want to record this podcast episode. I don't care if it makes sense or not. I don't care if it was on the content calendar or not. I don't care if I should have a video with it or not, whatever. Right. I know I want to share this, so I'm going to share it. And by recording this, it opens up so many other pathways for creation. I'm doing a live training tomorrow for my clients. I know that fact that I created this right now is going to make that creation easier. It's going to make posting on Instagram stories easier. It's going to make my next YouTube video easier. The more I create, the more I create that may be true for you. Maybe you've been making that wrong like I was, or maybe that's you. It's not true for you. So you don't need to then hold yourself to that same standard or way of doing things. Right? And so this is where, when the rubber meets the road, when it comes to releasing the shoulds, this is where the action part comes in. Some of the other stuff is like thinking and reminding yourself and muting people and blah, blah, blah. But this is where it starts to really come to fruition is when you actually act in a way that is based on you and your strengths and self-awareness and like your own brain. Stop making it wrong. Stop letting people tell you something about you is wrong and that there's this big thing that's the one reason everything sucks. It's like, it sucks because you're trying to put yourself in someone else's box because you think someone else knows better than you. And yes, mentorship is powerful. And yes, like I love to learn and I'm not anti that at all. I love to learn. I love to be in mentorship. I love to be in community and in masterminding. And we have to always come back to our own intuition and our own way of doing things and our own truth. And I want that for you. I want you to start doing that right, right now. If there's something already that you know, you've been stuck in the should loop of. If there was no right and wrong, like, what would you do? What do you want to do? What would be fun? Maybe you don't even really know yet. So then how can we do some reflection on like, well, when do you typically know those things? I know for me, walking around outside or voice memoing is how I unlock my inner truth. I It doesn't come through journaling. It doesn't come through all these other things at least as easily. If I'm walking and talking, I start to realize things. That's why literally I'm recording this walking around my bedroom. Like, I'm not trying to force myself to sit at my desk with my camera on because I should. Instead, I'm saying, Hey, well, I channel information. I channel all this way. Way better, way stronger, way more powerfully, way more intuitively when I'm walking. So I'm going to record this while I'm walking around. So I make that work. I have the little tiny microphone that I got from Amazon. That's incredibly cheap. Like I'm recording this straight from my phone. I don't have a camera on, I'm not following a script or an outline, right? Like, so I'm, I'm building my personal. Process and system and workflow around me. Okay. And I want that for you, your version of that. I want you to think of one way, one thing right now that you know about yourself. When do you have clarity? Is it when you're on a walk? Is it when you're in a shower? Is it when you're doing something completely different? Is it when you're journaling or pulling tarot cards? Or is it when you are talking to a friend or on a mastermind call? Like check in with yourself right now, realize when do those moments of breakthrough really come through for you? And I want you to do that. Make time for it. I don't care if it's five minutes or 50 minutes, like prioritize that a lot. Allow yourself to fully process the thoughts and the feelings and everything, all the shoulds, and reconnect with your own way. And once you do that, it starts to feel a lot easier to move forward, even without all the answers, even without all the plan, without all the clarity. and that action and that momentum and you doing things is going to actually help you. help and have a profound ripple effect. I'm recording this right now after being in a very tough season of not feeling connected with my own intuition. And I won't get into all that right now, but the thing that's bringing me through that and finally on the other side of it. Is that I'm actually fine with not having all the answers. I'm fine with not having a 90 day plan where every single day is, is planned out because you know what, that's never actually worked for me. If you've been in any of my coaching spaces, even when I teach 90 day quarterly planning, you know, it's not really about having micro decisions planned out for 90 days. 90 days from now, right? But it's easy to get caught up thinking you should. It's easy to get caught up in the noise and the convictions of others. And it can help, it can make it where you lose your own convictions. So after this, I want you to literally have a moment if you don't already know and say, and literally think through, talk out loud what I'm talking about. However, when do you actually feel like you process all the things inside? How does that happen? When do the breakthroughs come through? Go do that today. Figure out what hell, what's going on, what shoulds are there for you, what you really want to do, and then take that one step. This episode, I think this is what I was going to say earlier. this podcast episode. Is, is this for me? It's like, Hey, I'm recommitting to just using my voice. Even when this isn't strategic, even when this isn't, you know, all the different things I was thinking I needed to be doing. Right. It's like, no, but we're going to go ahead and just do the thing. I'm going to trust myself. I'm going to trust my voice. I'm going to trust my intuition and I'm just going to use it and bring it to life and then continue to move forward. And I'm going to focus on right now instead of three weeks from now. Will I have a loose plan? Do I forward think? Of course. But am I going to spend any more time trying to fix myself, trying to force myself to do things a different way? No, we're coming back to our most Iconic selves. We're coming back to. Our most intuitive selves, where we under, we have a self awareness and we no longer fight the things that are easier for us, the things that help us be creative, the things that help us use our voice to have an impact, to do the work we want to do in the world. and we just allow it to be our own way, even when it's doesn't make sense. And we plug into mentorship for refinement, for support, but not just for a strategic answer and assuming someone else like has the magic pill solution, right? Okay. I'm feeling like this message is complete. If you enjoyed this, I would love to hear from you. I would love to hear any offhand comments. Ha moments or breakthroughs. You can DM me on Instagram.
